Water Quality Month: Zox and The Thirst Project

August 7, 2019

Swaziland is one of the smallest countries in Africa. Of the 1.25 million people who live there, 40% are unemployed and 63% live in poverty. On top of that, almost one-fifth of school-aged children don’t have the ability to go to school.

Access to water is an essential piece of the problems listed above. While it’s clear that water is essential to good health, there are a number of other crippling effects that arise when communities don’t have ready access to clean water.

Women and children often spend huge portions of the day retrieving water. Carrying heavy jugs to and from water sources prevents women from having time to work, children from going to school, and generations from finding prosperity.

August is Water Quality Month

Access to clean water is a real issue, and there’s a lot being done to change it. The United Nations has long acknowledged the dire need for action and awareness of this issue.

So, as August rolls around, we find ourselves in a month that’s dedicated to improving the quality of water that humanity has access to. There are a number of groups that are helping and can help you make a contribution to the cause.

The Thirst Project

The Thirst Project is the world’s largest youth water organization. Their efforts have impacted over 400,000 people in 13 countries, building wells that provide clean water to the communities who need it most.

These are wells that reduce water related deaths by over 20% and greatly improve sanitation. Teams ensure that communities are equipped with latrines and proper sanitation techniques that can further reduce water-related deaths.

When properly maintained, these wells can last up to forty years. That’s enough time for a generational impact to take place.
